Your pantry cupboard probably took a bit of a beating last year. You started the year off all well-meaning and with a healthy outlook, and by the end of it you were searching for the last bit of broccoli that hadn’t gone a bit off coloured yet… don’t worry, it happens to us all! But you’re going to need to do some serious restocking right about now, and that probably feels like it’s going to take a lot of time and quite a bit of money.

But now that 2019 is here, and there’s a lot of new and exciting buying opportunities on the table (the sales alone could stock you up for the next 3 months!), let’s think about what kind of items you’re going to need to stock your cupboards out with. The kids want all kinds of sweets and treats, especially with it being school holidays, and even mum and dad probably like to indulge every now and again. But you know you can’t too often, and you know you’ve got to fit a good monthly shop in, so let me help you out with a few pointers if I may.

Stock Up on Spices
Spices are the ingredients that are going to make your meals this year incredibly tasty, and they’re going to sprinkle your dishes with a lot of variances. After all, you can’t just salt and pepper everything for the rest of your life, and the kids are probably getting bored of this combination as well! Not to mention, the more you pile on the same foods for your family dinners, the fussier children tend to get about the plates in front of them…
So make sure you’re stocking up on species, and even buy yourself a whole new spice rack if need be. Cover all the basics first: get some basil, some garlic, some oregano, some cayenne pepper, some mint, some paprika, maybe even a little turmeric, and there’s no harm in buying a jar of italian herbs either. Maybe you’ve even got room for a Chinese five spice, for when you’re fancying something stronger and sweeter for the evening. The kids will especially love that taste when it’s cooked into a meal!
Get Yourself Some Oils
Once you’ve finished outfitting your spice cupboard, it’s time to turn to the oils you use to cook anything that goes in and out of the frying pan, and anything you want to roast in the oven as well. If you’re someone who likes to snack on hummus with carrot sticks from time to time, and you want the kids to get involved with a healthy snack like this as well, adding a bit of olive oil can do wonders for the palate.
Canola oil is another great alternative to standard vegetable oil, as it has a lot of healthy unsaturated fats, which help to strengthen all your organs (especially your heart!). And it’s an oil that doesn’t have too much of a flavour either, so it’s great for just bunging in a pan and using to cook out other ingredients.
Remember Home Baking Essentials
Buy some flour, both plain and self-raising, and make sure you’ve got some icing sugar in the cupboard as well. Milk and eggs are weekly shop items, and you never know when you’re going to want to whip up a batch of cupcakes to keep the kids entertained and fed, or just coat some chicken legs in batter and fry them up for a delicious treat!
Don’t Forget the Medicine Cabinet!
The medicine cabinet definitely needs some updating for the new year! You’re going to want to check all of the expiry dates on the bottles and tubes you have in there already, as well as check the average shelf life labelled on the back. And it’s always good to buy some more bandages and plasters, to make sure you’ve always got a good supply of them in your house.
Get yourself some new toothpaste and mouthwash whilst you’re at it, and then move on to the more effective medicinal treatments: You’ll want to make sure you’ve got plenty of Dymadon in there as well, for when you go back to work, and come home again with a bit of a head or neck ache. Even just standing behind a counter for a 7 to 8 hour shift can make all your muscles tense up and leave you aching all over.
Your cupboards deserve a fresh lease of life for the New Year, so stock ‘em up!
